Division 1
Winterton has a mixed fortunes this week firstly they were well beaten 8-2 by leaders Hot Heads, a match in which Liam Rowson returned to form winning all his matches although Aaron Rush did push Liam all the way in a five set tussle in which Aaron had chances in some very close games.
In a rearranged fixture Winterton took maximum points against close rivals Bangels in a 7-3 victory Mick Harris and Darren Rush were both unbeaten on the night and Aarons straight sets win over Ron Ellis ensured maximum points for Winterton.
Musketeers had a comfortable night overpowering struggling Aces 9-1, Clive Mitchell returning to the Scunthorpe league picking up Aces consolation.
Musketeers victory combined with Winterton’s victory over Bangels make the league table very interesting with Hot Heads seemingly out of site, but the second third and fourth placed teams all on the same amount of points and all played the same amount of games and with Titans potentially in position to overtake the three teams directly above them with two games in hand will make a very interesting climax to the season.
Division 2
Crusaders crept back into pole position in division two thanks to a 6-4 victory over Beavers, Alan Bunch being the star of the show for Crusaders with a hat trick of victories although Shaun Foster and Luke Hornsey did push Alan all the way to Five sets.
Falcons had a routine 10-0 success against Angels with Danny Shaw, Mark Woods and Fernando de Silva all in fine form.
In a re arranged fixture Harriers were only able to field two players against Angels and the Angels took advantage earning their first points of the season in a 5-5 draw, John Dook got Angels off to a great start beating Ted Cooper in straight sets and John Mumby’s win against Ted ensured Angels at long last were up and running.
Division 3
Second placed Imps kept the pressure on the leaders with beating close rivals Burton 7-3 Emmanuel Obieke starred for Imps with three victories while Donna Mann chipped in with two wins and Bob Pitchford had a narrow victory over Tim Peters to ensure maximum points in a good team performance.
Heroes came out on top in the clash of the bottom two teams with Robert Bunton and Karen Kelly both putting in strong performances with Becki Kelly chipping in with a brace of victories for an 8-2 victory over a very much improving Pingers.
Division 1
After almost 5 months of table tennis Liam Rowson has eventually lost his 100% record after going down in a fiercely contested five set match with Richard Zurynski, a match which also saw leaders Hot Heads lose their first match of the season against Musketeers. Richard was unbeaten on the night winning all his matches 11-7 in the fifth and team mate Steve Barnes contributed with two wins and paired up with Richard to take the doubles and a well deserved 6-4 victory.
Second placed Bangels took full advantage of Hot Heads slip up beating Bandits 9-1,a harsh score line for Bandits as there were some very close matches Mick Williams in particular showing big signs of improvement after stepping up from division 2 this season. Stuart Temple took Bandits consolation with a hard fought 12-10 in the fifth victory over John Peters while Sam Mason stepping up from division 2 on loan put up a spirited performance pushing all the Bangels players hard.
Third placed Winterton piled on the pressure on bottom placed Aces and kept the pressure on the leading two teams with a 8-2 success, Mick Harris and Darren Rush were in good form for Winterton while Lee Harris had a very good win over John Mackey, but fell short against Mick and Rob Powell.
Division 2
Fusion took over top spot in division two with a 8-2 victory over Angels, again Sam mason and Fred Kershaw were in unbeatable form for Fusion, John Mumby and Steve Wallis both picked up a single win each for Angels.

HANDICAP
The season kicked off again after the Christmas break with the handicap competition which saw some hard fought matches including the closest finish so far this season.
Falcons won fairly comfortably against fellow division two side Spartans with a solid performance from the trio of Danny Shaw, Mark Wood and Fernando De Silva giving Falcons a 46 point winning margin.
Third division’s Kirton Knights just got thru against Titans by 25 points despite the best efforts of Mick Clay who only conceded 28 points on the night and now the Kirton outfit will be looking forward to their semi final against another first division team Aces.
Josh Walshe starred for Vultures when the youngsters took on the very experienced Crusaders team, Josh managed to take a couple of ends during the match and score a crucial 73 points on the night earning his team a 2 point victory and a semi final place against Falcons.
DIVISION 1
Aces picked up a useful point against Musketeers thanks mainly to the efforts of Paul Rodgers who won all his singles on the night including a 12-10 in the fifth against Richard Zurynski. Paul Barnes also played very well under pressure to beat John Mackey in the final match of the night to ensure victory for Musketeers.
Aces were again in action against Bandits in a crucial bottom of the table clash, which saw some great games of table tennis. Bandits Wayne Pettiford led the way for Bandits winning all his matches including a five set success against the inform Paul Rodgers. Stuart Temple also played a blinder beating Mick Powell and Paul Rodgers and coming back from 7-1 down in the fifth against Rob Powell to have a match point only to lose 13-11 in another terrific game. Bandits Mick Williams also stepped his game up with what proved to be the vital match on the night with a 11-9 in the decider win over Mick Powell.
DIVISION 2
A 6-4 victory for Fusion put a little more distance between the two teams at the top of division two, Fred Kershaw again leading the way for Fusion with a hat trick of victories and Sam Mason giving good support with a brace of victories. However Dave Lakin put up stiff resistance for Spartans taking two matches and pushing Fred to a fifth set.
Beavers overpowered Angels 10-0 Shaun Foster Kev and Jake Townell proving a little too strong for Angels.
Hospital Crusaders kept the pressure up at the top of the table also beating Angels 10-0.
DIVISION 3
Kirton Knights came out 10-0 winners against Kirton Pingers Knights obviously benefitting from their experiences in the handicap competition earlier in the week with a routine victory only the doubles going to five sets.
Leaders Chancers also had an emphatic 10-0 success against Heroes although Ben Griffiths was pushed all the way in all his matches all of them going to five sets, but Ben had just enough on all three occasions.

Runaway leaders hotheads were surprisingly held to a draw not once but twice this week firstly by Bangels and then by Titans.
Andy Kelly put up strong resistance for Bangels winning two matches and pairing up with Anth Thomas to inflict a rare doubles defeat on Paul and Liam Rowson , both Ron Ellis and Anth Thomas chipped in with a single win each, while Liam Rowson maintained his 100% record winning rather comfortably on the night and earning hotheads a well deserved draw.
Mick Clay and Andy Prescott playing for Titans did push Liam all the way and can both consider themselves unfortunate not to beat Liam, Mick was leading 9-6 in the decider while Andy was 2-1 and 9-7 up only to lose out 11-7 in the decider. Titans Mike Ellis also made a significant contribution beating Phil Dixon and teaming up with Mick Clay to take the doubles to earn his team two welcolme points.
Bandits failed to pick up any points this week despite playing twice this week firstly going down 7-3 to Winterton and then losing to Musketeers by the same score. On both occasions bandits Wayne Pettiford put up strong resistance winning two matches in both, but to no avail.
Darren Rush starred for Winterton winning all his matches including a straight sets victory over Wayne while Lee Harris’s win over Stu Temple ensured Winterton took maximum points.
Bandits Mick Williams had a very good win over Paul Barnes in the Musketeers match while Steve Barnes hat trick was vital including a 15-13 in the decider against Wayne Pettiford.
Div 2
Crusaders kept the pressure on the others with a 7-3 success against Falcons, Mick Cottam playing a starring role winning all his matches for Crusaders. Fred Midwinter helped out with two wins and Alan Bunch took one victory in yet another good team performance.
Div 3
A Stephen Brooks Hat trick made the difference For Burton as they squeezed past Kirton 6-4 in what was a very close match, Nick Lindstrom chipped in with two very good wins over David Petitjean and Tony Futo. Rod Boyers also picked up a brace of victories for Kirton earning them a point.
Chancers had a 10-0 success against struggling Pingers although Wayne Spindley did take Ben Griffiths to five sets and Chris Babb also too Ben to four sets.

Second placed Titans were well beaten by nearest rivals Winterton, the Harris family had a particularly good night for Winterton with Lee taking the notable scalps of Andy Prescott and Martin Simpson, while Mick Harris was unbeatable on the night winning all his matches comfortably.
Musketeers and Bangles played out an entertaining draw when the met this week, Steve Barnes was in fine form for Musketeers winning all his singles and teaming up with Richard Zurynski to take the vital doubles. Paul Barnes was unlucky to just lose out to Bangles John Peters in a very hard fought five set encounter.
Wayne Pettiford put up strongest resistance for bottom placed Bandits when they faced leaders Hot Heads, Wayne picked up both of bandits rubbers in an 8-2 defeat.
Div 2
Hospital Crusaders crept into top spot after playing two matches this week firstly dispatching Falcons 9-1 in a rearranged fixture, Fernando Da Silva picking up Falcons consolation with a good win over Fred Midwinter.

Three days later Crusaders picked up maximum points again against Harriers, Emmanuel Obieke stepping up from division 3 played exceptionally well for Harriers winning two matches, but the trio of Fred Midwinter, Alan Bunch and John Gallagher proved just too strong picking up a maximum points victory to lead the division by one point.
Mark Woods was in great form for Falcons when they entertained Harriers winning all his matches. Danny Shaw and Steve Wallis had a terrific tussle with Danny just nicking it in five very close hard fought sets, giving Falcons a 6-4 victory in the process.
Spartans convincingly beat Angels 10-0 although John Mumby did play very well for Angels and was most unfortunate to lose out in two very close five set matches.
Fusion’s 8-2 success against Beavers kept them within one point of Crusaders at the top of the table, Sam Mason and Fred Kershaw were firing on all cylinders winning 3 singles apiece and teaming up to take the doubles.
Div 3
Joint leaders Chancers unexpectedly dropped 3 points against knights despite Steve Wallis’s best efforts for the Chancers. Steve won all his games and teamed up with Ben Griffiths to take the doubles, but the trio of David Petitjean, Rod Boyers and Tony Futo dug in to win two singles each and ensure a 6-4 victory.
A very strong Imps team took full advantage of Chancers slip up overpowering Heroes 8-2 to go top of the league Emmanuel Obieke being Imps Star performer winning all his matches. Rob Bunton did have a particularly good night for the Heroes with two excellent wins over Donna Mann and Bob Pitchford.
Burton comfortably brushed aside Kirton Pingers 10-0, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the Kirton side as on this occasion as they could only field two players.

Bandits earned a useful away point against App Frod Titans thanks to Wayne Pettiford’s hat trick of victories and Mick Williams crucial win over Martin Simpson. Both Andy Prescott and Mike Ellis took a brace of victories and then paired up to take the doubles. Martin Simpsons straight sets victory over Mietek Drozdowski ensured the steel men a narrow 6-4 success.
A weakened Hot Heads side still had enough to edge past Winterton in another close contest, with Hot Heads’ star player Liam Rowson out with an injured ankle a shock was on the cards, but Paul Rowson steadied Hot Heads nerves winning all his matches. John Frost also played very well getting the better of Winterton’s father and son combination of Arron and Darren Rush and Phil Dixons excellent victory over Mick Harris ensured Hot Heads winning run continues.
Div 2
Spartans proved too strong for Harriers with two strong performances from Tom Clay and Nathan Smy sealing all the points for Spartans. Ted Cooper and Martin Heywood both took a solitary victory each and Steve Wallis stepping up from division 3 played well to beat Dave Laking in straight sets in a 7-3 defeat.
Beavers Kev Townell had a good night against Hospital Crusaders beating John Gallagher and Mick Cottam and narrowly losing out to Fred Midwinter. Jake Townell also played well to get the better of Mick Cottam and had a close five setter with Fred Midwinter earning Beavers a useful point against the current league leaders.
Falcons were too powerful for Angels winning 9-1 although there were some close matches, John Mumby picked up the consolation for Angels with a good win over Danny Shaw in a five set contest.
Div 3
The youngsters of SSC Vultures came out 8-2 winners against Kirton Knights a score line which is a little harsh on the Kirton team considering so many of the games were very close with only one match won in straight sets.

Ryan Lonsdale led the way for the Vultures unbeaten on the night. Kirton’s Tony Futo did very well to beat the up and coming Josh Walshe in straight sets while teammate David Petitjean come out on top in a terrific 5 set match against Will Hornsey.
A strong Imps team came out 9-1 winners against Burton, Nick Lindstrom taking Burtons consolation with a great win over the vastly experienced Donna Mann

Liam Rowson once again led the way for Hot Heads as they brushed aside Musketeers 7-3 although Steve Barnes and Andy Dibdin did both push Liam all the way in two good 5 set matches.
Mick Harris and Aaron Rush starred for Winterton both taking a hat trick of victories when they faces Aces, but the trio of John Mackey, Rob Powell and Mick Powell all dug in and won one match each plus the doubles to earn un unexpected point.
Bandits played well to earn a draw against closest rivals Aces thanks to Wayne Pettiford winning all his matches including the doubles and Stuart temple’s straight sets win over Mick Powell while John Mackey and Rob Powell both picked up a brace of victories each for Aces.

Bandits didn’t fare so well against Bangels when they found Andy Kelly and Ron Ellis in fine form, Wayne Pettiford took Bandits consolation beating Anth Thomas in a 9-1 defeat.
Div 2
Fusion continue to lead the way in division 2 this time overcoming Angels 8-2 with strong performances from Sam Mason and Callum Driver. John and Sue Mumby both beat Craig Stenton in two very tight matches.

Two victories in two days helped Chancers move level into a three way tie at the top of the table, brothers Steve and Chris Wallis were in terrific form on both occasions firstly winning all their games against Burton in a 7-3 victory. However Stephen Brookes did play extremely well for Burton pushing Chris all the way in a tight five setter.
Heroes were Chancers next victims in a 9-1 success with Ben Griffiths gaining two good wins over the improving Becky Kelly and Rob Bunton, Karen Kelly took Heroes consolation.

Titans continue to impress this week taking maximum points from the highly rated musketeers with an impressive 7-3 success, again Mick clay playing a starring role winning all his matches once again.
Bangels picked up their first points of the season with a hard fought 6-4 victory over close rivals Winterton, Andy Kelly won all his matches while Aaron Rush played very well for Winterton with a brace of victories.

Leaders fusion continued their strong start to the season with a 7-3 win over Harriers Sam Mason and Fred Kershaw doing the damage for Fusion both unbeaten on the night.

Steve Brooks maintained his 100% record in division 3 helping his team to a 7-3 success against Vultures and go joint top in the process.
Joint leaders Imps also had a good night picking up maximum points over newcomers Kirton Pingers.

Richard Zurynski starred for the newly formed musketeers team winning all his matches in their 6-4 success against Winterton, while Winterton’s Darren rush can consider himself very unlucky losing out to Steve Barnes 12-10 in the decider.
Hot heads continued their strong start beating aces 8-2 Glenn Mcardle and Mick Powell both picking up a consolation win each for the Aces team.
Titans pulled a memorable 7 – 3 win over Bangels with Mick Clay in fine form winning all his matches and then pairing up with mike Ellis to take the doubles, Andy Prescott also had a great night beating Anth Thomas and a 20-18 in the decider victory over Ron Ellis.

John Gallagher starred for Crusaders as they took maximum points against Spartans, Mick Cottam chipped in with two wins and Fred Midwinter picked up a great win over Tom Clay.

Fusion’s 7-3 victory over Falcons meant they went to the top of the table, Fred Kershaw led the way with a hat trick of victories with Callum Driver and Sam Mason both picking up two wins each.
Beavers just edged out harriers 6-4 in a close contest with Shaun Foster Luke Hornsey and Jake Townell all contributing for Beavers in a good team effort, while Martin Heywood and Phil Bodsworth both put up stiff resistance for Harriers both winning two matches each.
Div 3
Chancers had a great night when they came up against Imps with brothers Steve and Chris Wallis both unbeatable on the night, but were made to fight all the way against Emmanuel Obieke in two five set tussles.
Rebecca Kelly played well for Heroes winning two matches when they came up against Kirton Knights, but to no avail as they Kirton outfit came out on top with a good 7-3 victory thanks to Rod Boyers steadying the ship with an unbeaten performance.

Reigning champions hot heads proved too strong for last season’s runners up bangels with a convincing 7-3 victory, Liam Rowson starring for the Hot Heads winning all his matches.paul rowson chipped in with two wins and John Frost gained the vital victory over John Peters to give the hot heads maximum points.
Titans were also in great form this week beating Aces 8-2 Mick Clay winning all his matches with Andy Ellis and Andy Prescott both taking two scalps each. Glen Mcardle and John Mackey both picked up a solitary win each for Aces.
New boys Bandits also had a tough night on the wrong end of a 8-2 score line against Musketeers, Andy Dibdin and Richard Zurynski both on top form for the musketeers. Wayne Pettiford did put up stiff resistance for the Bandits beating Paul Barnes and taking Richard to five sets and just losing to Andy Dibdin 12-10 in the decider.

Beavers started their campaign with a terrific 10-0 whitewash of newly promoted Angels, Jake and Kev Townell aided by Shaun Foster were all in great form for the beavers.
In a much tighter affair fusion and Spartans fought out a 5-5 draw Tom Clay starring for Spartans winning all his matches with Dave Lakin just piping Callum Driver in five sets. The youth of Sam Mason and the experience of Fred Kershaw levelled things up in a match that had no less than 7 five set matches one four setter and a match conceded due to illness during the match.
Div 3
Two Brand new teams met this week when Kirton Pingers entertained Chancers, Steve Wallis was in fine form for Chancers winning all his matches in straight sets while Ben Griffiths also won all his games , but had a much tougher time with two five setters and a four setter. A special mention should go to young Henry Walshe who played very well especially considering the short time he has being playing the game.

Again two brand new teams met when Burton entertained Kirton Knights a match in which Burton continued with their good start to the season with a 8-2 victory. The score line seems a little harsh on the Kirton outfit just losing out on several close matches.
SCUNTHORPE TABLE TENNIS - week 1
This week saw the start of the new table tennis season, with 21 teams competing in three divisions and no less than 18 new faces playing in our league this season.
SSC Hot Heads

New boy to the team John Frost
Reigning champions Hot Heads made a perfect start to the season defeating Titans 10-0, youngster John Frost made a promising debut for Hot Heads winning all his singles and then teaming up with Paul Rowson to take the doubles. Martin Simpson provided the stiffest opposition for the hot heads losing out in 4 close sets to john frost and just losing out to Phil Dixon in 5 sets.
Newly promoted Bandits got a glimpse of how hard things might be in the top flight when they came up against SSc Winterton, Mietek Drozdowski and Stuart Temple losing all their matches in straight sets. On the bright side for bandits Wayne Pettiford did win two matches beating Aaron and Darren Rush which was a pretty good effort considering it was the first time he’s played in two years.
Likewise newly promoted Angels found the going tough in division two going down 9-1 to harriers, Phil Bodsworth did have a comfortable night on his debut in the Scunthorpe league winning all his matches in straight sets, while the opposite could be said of John Dook who found life rather difficult on his league debut, but still it’s very early days.
Another newly promoted team falcons came out on the wrong side of a 9-1 score line with Mark Woods taking the consolation victory for the falcons. Tom Clay made a smooth transition from div 3 to div 2 winning all his matches and the doubles in his first full match in division 2.
The closest match of the week took place between Hospital Crusaders and SSc Fusion where four matches were close five set affairs and three were close four setters. Fusion’s Sam mason was in great form winning all his matches on the night including a 12-10 in the decider over Mick Cottam.
Another league debutant craig stenton played well ,but just fell short of Mick Cottam losing out 11-9 in the decider and was involved in some good games with alan bunch and john Gallagher.
In division 3 a whole host of players played their first ever league match, firstly Kirton Pingers came up against the vastly experienced side of App Frod Imps and it was no suprise the imps came out 10-0 winners. The Kirton trio of Wayne Spindley ,Keith Mason and Chris Babb certainly did not disgrace themselves all putting up creditable performances.
Burton ttc also playing their first ever league match did have a successful start to their campaign against Heroes with Steve brooks starring for the debutants winning all his matches on the night. Nick Lindstom also had a good start to his season picking up a brace of victories over Becki Kelly and Rob Bunton. Gareth Brough also played very well beating Becki in a good five set match and just falling short in another five set encounter with Rob Bunton. Karen Kelly played very well for the heroes keeping the score respectable with a brace of victories.
New team Chancers found the going tough against Vultures going down 7-3, being let down at the last minute by several players didn’t help Chancers cause, but Henry Walshe stepped in at the last gasp and performed creditably taking ryan Lonsdale to four sets.
Steve Wallis was in good form for Chancers winning all his matches in straight sets and he may well be the man to beat in this division!!

Scunthorpe table tennis annual championships
The Scunthorpe table tennis Association held their annual championships this weekend an event which was dominated by 15 year old Liam Rowson who won no less than 4 titles including the open singles title.
Liam started his weekend retaining his cadet singles title (under 15 on 1/1/2011) with Tom Clay taking the runners up spot.
Next up Liam also retained his junior (u 18) title beating former teammate Sam mason who put up a brave fight before succumbing to Liam’s powerful topspin game.
Liam also featured in a new event for this year a junior draw doubles in which all doubles pairings were drawn out of a hat, Liam was paired with Rebecca Kelly, but just fell at the final hurdle, taking the runners up spot losing out to Sam Mason and Ryan Mitchell.
One event which Liam didn’t win was the ladies singles!!This was retained by Donna Mann with Karen Kelly taking the silver medal.
Donna also went on to take the mixed doubles partnered by Mick ‘the net ‘Harris with Jason Carter and Karen Kelly claiming the runners up spot.
The main event of the weekend was the open singles which saw some great games and the odd shock result along the way. The first semi final was an extremely close affair between team mates Andrew Dibdin and Richard Zurynski with Richard sneaked thru. The second semi final was between Andy Kelly and our hero Liam Rowson who won in three straight sets.
The final didn’t disappoint with some great attacking play from both players, the crowd were treated to a great five set match, but Liam was just a little too strong for Richard in the deciding set.
Liam also paired up with father Paul to take the open doubles title defeating Andy Kelly and Anth Thomas in the final to complete a terrific weekend for Liam.
In the remaining events Richard Zurynski won the intermediate title beating lee Harris in the final. The veteran’s title was a repeat of last year’s final in which Anth Thomas staged another great comeback to get the better of Darren Rush. Andrew Dibdin completed a good weekend by taking the super vets title with Stuart Temple runner up and Bob Pitchford in third place. The pro am doubles was won by Paul Rowson and Callum Driver who got the better of Andy Kelly and Tom Clay.
The division two singles was won by Stuart Temple who defeated Sam Mason in yet another close and exciting five set match. Stuart teamed up with Mick Williams to win the division two doubles getting the better of Mick Cottam and Fred Midwinter.
The division three singles title was claimed by Fernando de Silva who on this occasion proved too strong for Tom Clay in the final. The husband and wife team of Sue and john Mumby just got the better of father and son mark and Daniel Shaw in the division three doubles final.
DIV 1
Leaders hot heads virtually guaranteed themselves the title after they defeated closest rivals Winterton 8-2 thanks to two great performances from Phil Dixon and Liam Rowson including great victories over mick ‘the net’ Harris.
Winterton however did spring back to form a few days later defeating Spartans 9-1, Fernando de Silva doing exceptionally well for Spartans stepping up from division 3 and taking the notable scalp of rob Trevethick.
Rookies Paul cairns had a good night against aces winning two matches against john Mackey and rob Powell before falling to mick Powell. Mark woods also did well to beat john Mackey and with lee Harris edging out rob Powell to earn a well earned point for the rookies.
DIV 2
Donna Mann did her best to halt bandits winning streak with a brace of victories against Glyn smith and Mietek Drozdowski, but the Bandits strength in depth shone thru with mick Williams unbeaten on the night while Glyn smith just got the better of Margaret wright in a terrific five set match which included a 19-17 game. Rod Boyers was also involved in another five set thriller against Glyn smith just losing out 11-9 in the decider.
Crusaders proved just too strong when they came up against the same imps team, rod put some resistance taking john Gallagher and mick Cottam to four sets, but could not stop the crusaders going on to a 10-0 success.
Beavers got the better of inter priory in the all App Frod clash with Kev Townell having a good night defeating Nathan Smythe and on loan Danny shaw before just losing out to Kyle Simpson. Jake Townell suffered a similar fate when facing Kyle Simpson just losing out by the odd point in the fifth set. Beavers Shaun foster however did get the better of Kyle, but lost out to Nathan Smythe and to Danny shaw who did well to beat Shaun considering Danny plays in a division lower, this match was rather unusual as every player managed at least one victory which is rather rare these days.

The youngsters of Ssc eagles who last week picked up their first points ever in a 5-5 draw went one step better this week with a great 7-3 success over Ssc vultures with Ryan Mitchell and rob Bunton now in top form winning all their matches.
Falcons secured the division 3 title after an overwhelming 9-1 victory over nearest rivals angels, Steve Welch saving the angels from a whitewash with a hard fought five set victory over bob Pitchford.
